Further north, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy offers encounters with endangered species like the Grevy’s zebra and black rhino in a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its commitment to responsible tourism and community engagement. The iconic Masai Mara National Reserve, often coupled with Tanzania’s Serengeti, showcases Africa’s quintessential landscapes and is renowned for the spectacular annual wildebeest migration, making it one of the world’s top wildlife destinations. ROOM
Betty-the-giraffe, a shy Rothschild giraffe born in 2000, came to Giraffe Manor in 2002 and is named after Betty Leslie-Melville, "The Giraffe Lady," who, alongside her husband Jock, purchased the manor in the 1970s and initiated the conservation efforts for the endangered giraffe species. Today, Betty’s legacy continues with the breeding and conservation program at the manor. Guests staying in Betty’s Room, a charming 32-square-metre space with a king-sized bed, fireplace, and a balcony perfect for feeding giraffes, can experience the manor's historical Art Deco bathroom, preserved to honor its heritage. At Tortilis Camp, set against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, 16 makuti-covered tents feature twin or double beds, en-suite bathrooms, and verandahs offering stunning views. Elewana Lewa Safari Camp, located within Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, provides comfortable tents with thatched roofs and ensuite bathrooms, alongside serene gardens, a sunny verandah, a swimming pool, and cosy lounges, all perfect for enjoying the wildlife and landscapes of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Restaurant
Waking up to breakfast with a giraffe is a unique and unforgettable experience. Depending on where you are staying, you will have breakfast either in the main manor or in the Garden Manor breakfast room, but don’t worry, the giraffes know exactly where to find you. Watch out for their long inquisitive tongues as they investigate what’s on offer; luckily, it’s nutritious dried pellets of grass they’re after, and not pancakes
Activities and services
Elewana Tortilis Camp, located on the secluded western edge of Amboseli National Park, offers guests an almost private safari experience, with exclusive access to the 30,000-acre Kitirua Conservancy. Unlike most lodges situated near the eastern gate, Tortilis Camp provides intimate game drives in custom-designed vehicles with expert guides, showcasing areas rarely visited by other tourists. Similarly, in the Lewa Conservancy, guests can enjoy limited-access game viewing in a fenced area designed to protect rhinos, along with elephants, buffalo, Grevy's zebra, and predators, all with stunning views of Mt. Kenya. The camp also offers game drives in both the Masai Mara National Reserve and the private Olderkesi Conservancy, where visitors can witness the famous wildebeest migration and other wildlife at a relaxed pace, ensuring a truly personal and immersive experience.
