From January 2024, all visitors traveling to Kenya will no longer need to apply for a traditional visa. Instead, the Kenyan government has introduced a new Republic of Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) system. This semi-automated system determines the eligibility of visitors to travel to Kenya and must be applied for by all travelers, including those who were previously visa-exempt.

What is the Republic of Kenya eTA?

The Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) is a mandatory travel authorization required for entry into Kenya. It is available online and is issued by the Kenyan government to screen visitors before they travel. The eTA replaces the traditional visa system and is now required for all foreign nationals visiting Kenya.

The eTA comes at a cost of $30 and must be applied for online through the dedicated portal at www.etakenya.go.ke.

Who Needs to Apply for the Kenya eTA?

All travelers, regardless of nationality, must apply for the Kenya eTA, including those who were previously exempt from visa requirements. This includes tourists, business travelers attending MICE events, and visitors combining bleisure activities with business.

Kenya eTA Application Process

Step 1: Access the Kenya eTA Portal

Visit the official Kenya eTA web portal at www.etakenya.go.ke to begin your application.

Step 2: Create an Account

• Register on the eTA portal by providing your email address and creating a password.
• Verify your email to activate your account.

Step 3: Complete the Application Form

Once logged in, you will need to fill out the online application form, which includes:

• Personal information: Full name, date of birth, nationality, passport number, and contact details.
• Travel details: Purpose of visit (tourism, business, or transit), arrival and departure dates, and accommodation information.
• Health information: Current health status and COVID-19 vaccination status (if required).

Step 4: Upload Supporting Documents

You will need to upload the following documents:

• A scanned copy of your passport (the passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Kenya).
• A passport-sized photograph.
• Proof of travel arrangements, such as flight tickets and accommodation bookings.

Step 5: Pay the eTA Fee

• The eTA fee is $30 and must be paid online using a valid credit or debit card.
• You will receive a receipt for the payment, which should be kept for your records.

Step 6: Submit Your Application

Once all the details are filled in and the fee is paid, submit your application. Processing time typically takes 2-3 business days.

Step 7: Receive Your eTA Confirmation

Upon approval, you will receive your eTA confirmation via email. This document should be printed out and presented to immigration officials upon arrival in Kenya.

Important Guidelines for Kenya eTA

• Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your entry date into Kenya.
• The eTA is valid for single entry and is required for every visit to Kenya.
• Apply for your eTA at least seven days before your planned travel date.
• Each traveler, including infants and children, must apply for an individual eTA.
